LUCCA: THE WALLED CITY

Lucca is a hidden gem that's often overlooked during an initial trip to discover Italy.

It is a beautiful Tuscan town that is rarely crowded. I once heard it referred to as "a small city with a big heart" and I couldn't agree more. The walls that encircle the village are wonderful to walk on for a beautiful view of the classic architecture and an opportunity to breathe in the Italian culture. When you enter the historic village, the streets are narrow and windy and most of them take you directly to the main piazza with the 11th century Duomo. The church is worth a visit for a small fee.

"The other piazza, a small oval, is always filled with a lively market as well as a selection of small shops."

It is called Piazza dell'Anfiteatro, and I love eating at this piazza, having a glass of prosecco or Campari, and watching the people graze by as I observe and imagine their lives.

As in every village, you can find adverts for a tour guide, cooking classes, sometimes painting classes, and scenic bike rides. I attended Borgo Bernardini Cooking School and absolutely loved it!

Lucca is also the home of Giacomo Puccini, the composer, so if the opera is playing, go to the theater for a look and a listen. You won't regret it! Italians love opera, it is a part of their DNA and it's no surprise.

Air BnBs are plentiful and so easy to find online. The last time I visited, we stayed a bit out of town at Albergo Villa Marta. It is a lovely home. Momma was with us, and if she liked it, you know it was perfect!

I have heard that Albergo alla Corte degli Angeli is friendly and quite nice. It is located right inside the old town and includes part of the ancient walls in its structure.
